South Madison Plan Review and Comment by 4:30 p.m. October 18^th

• The first complete draft of the South Madison Plan is now available for public review and comment at www.cityofmadison.com/dpced/planning/south-madison-plan/3150/. Submit comments and complete the related survey by 4:00 p.m. on October 18^th.

Junction Ridge Park Oasis Opening October 23^rd, 12-4:00 p.m.

• Junction Ridge Neighborhood will put the finishing touches on its new Neighborhood Oasis at Junction Ridge Park, 8502 Elderberry Rd, Madison, WI 53717 on Saturday, October 23, 12:00 p.m. (rain date is Sunday, October 24). Work will be followed by a celebration at 3:00 p.m.. There will be a patio with seating, surrounded by native plants. There will also be a small prairie with interpretive signs and welcome signs at park entrances. Funding sources included H&R Block Foundation, area residents, the Planning Division’s Neighborhood Grant Program, among other sources.

28^th Annual Madison Compost Bin Truckload Sale October 23^rd

• RainReserve will hold the 28th annual Madison compost bin truckload sale on October 23, 2021 at the Garver Feed Mill (3241 Garver Green). Pre-orders are now available. The location provides easy pick-up and experts will be on hand to answer questions.

Local redistricting is happening now! The City’s Redistricting Committee needs your feedback on two Alder District Concepts Maps by Sunday September 26th. 

Local redistricting is the process of redrawing the City’s wards and alder districts based on population changes since 2010. Redistricting determines how communities and neighborhoods are assembled into alder districts and other voting districts.

Redistricting 2021 – The redrawing of the City of Madison’s wards and alder districts is happening now! Join us for one of our Redistricting Informational Meetings on September 22 at 12-1pm or 6-7pm or provide feedback on draft maps at a library near you from September 20-26th.

South Madison Plan – The City of Madison will be introducing to the Common Council in the coming months the complete draft of the South Madison Plan. Before that happens, we would like to invite everyone from the South Madison to share their input and help the City complete the vision for the area. There will be two online engagement meetings and one in-person conversation with a free community meal. You only need to attend one meeting that works best for your schedule.

• The annual Rain Reserve compost bin sale will be happening again this year at Garver Feed Mill. Learn more about this at the Streets Division’s website.
• Brush collection is wrapping up for 2021, so check the brush schedule before setting out your brush.
• And as always, be sure you are recycling the right stuff the right way. And never place batteries in your recycling cart.

Madison BCycle Launches Community Pass Program – Library card holders can check out one of the available Madison BCycle passes from any Madison Public Library location. The passes can be checked out for up to a week at a time and provide access to over 300 electric-assist bikes at more than 50 BCycle stations. Crossing Guards Needed – The City of Madison is looking to fill a few more Crossing Guard positions, particularly in the west/near west area. The time commitment is typically around 10 hours per week, depending on the location. Candidates should have a desire to help children walk/bike to school safely. Remember, Large Item Collection has Changed

Before you set your items out to the curb for the Streets Division to collect them, you need to submit a work order to schedule the pickup. The website to book your large item collection appointment is www.cityofmadison.com/LargeItemWorkOrder.

Student Move Out

The first two weeks of August always brings out a big mess to the curb as thousands of downtown leases all end around August 15.  Each year, around 1 million pounds of junk gets set out to the curb for Streets Division crews to collect, so it’s important to follow the rules so collection can be fast and safe.

The Police Civilian Oversight Board (COB) and the City of Madison are looking to hire an exceptional individual with a commitment to racial equity and an understanding of oppression and institutional racism to serve as the City’s first ever Independent Police Monitor.

The preferred candidate shall understand racial inequalities specifically in the criminal justice system and bring prior experience successfully working with multicultural communities. This person will demonstrate knowledge of social injustices and will quickly understand the community’s attitude towards the organization and historical and contemporary race relations.

The City has launched a new webpage for the American Rescue Plan Act (www.cityofmadison.com/arpa) to provide information about the planned allocation of federal funds to support an equitable recovery and continue to provide government services. The City will host two information sessions to share information about the annual budget process and address funding allocations outlined in the plan. The information sessions will take place on July 22nd (4:30-6:30pm) and July 27th (4:00-5:00pm). The sessions will be recorded and posted to the webpage.

About the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)

The City of Madison will receive $47.2 million of federal funding through the State and Local Recovery Funds component of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to recover from the negative public health and economic impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The City has adopted a plan to use ARPA funds to address critical community issues, support an equitable recovery, and continue to provide government services.

The City’s plan for ARPA funding focuses on five priority areas –

• Violence Prevention & Youth Engagement – $2,585,000.
• Homelessness Support – $8,650,000.
• Affordable Housing — $6,650,000.
• Emerging Needs — $1,000,000.
• Economic Development — $3,915,000.

The allocations were recommended by cross-agency Recovery Teams comprised of City staff with expertise in affordable housing, community services, economic development, public health, and other areas, and were prioritized based on impact, urgency, and feasibility balanced with the fiscal needs brought on by COVID-19. These priority areas and initial allocations were approved by the Common Council on July 6, 2021. There will be ongoing opportunities for community members, community based organizations, the Common Council, and other stakeholders to provide input on specific projects that utilize ARPA funds.

The City of Madison Finance Department invites residents to attend the ARPA information sessions and to follow along on the ARPA webpage that will be regularly updated with information about projects related to ARPA funding and opportunities to access those funds. It Takes a Village July 20 Take two! This Community Resource Fair focuses on bringing the community together in a fun environment to learn about services available on the south side of Madison. Stop by Penn Park between 12-5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20 to meet new librarians from Goodman South Madison, enjoy a cookout, get free books from the Madison Reading Project and engage with other public servants. Madison Public Library Artist in Residence Program This summer The Bubbler at Madison Public Library is launching a new artist-in-residence program called the Bubbler Artist Cohort. Six diverse teaching artists will work together to create community connections and creative opportunities around a single theme. As part of a larger initiative by Madison Public Library called YOU(th) Belong, the Cohort plans to collaborate over the course of six months to explore the spectrum of “Belonging” with youth (8 – 18 years old). Carts in Madison Parks! The City of Madison has been awarded a $50,000 Street for Pandemic Response and Recovery grant through the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) to launch a Carts in Parks Vending Pilot Program this summer into fall! This program will provide daily food cart vending in 20 parks around Madison, support community-driven micro vending markets, reduce the barriers to vending in city parks, provide greater food access, and enhance our community gathering spaces.
